Newtonite Homes
The once and for all solution for damp and
stained walls
-
Newtonite
damp proofing membrane has
unique qualities which eliminate the effects of rising and penetrating damp
whilst improving insulation
-
Newtonite
can be used wherever there is a wall which normally would prohibit the use
of plaster eg: brickwork covered by layers of paint or saturated with oil,
limewash, salt, acid or staining from any source
-
Newtonite
provides long lasting protection. Effective for the remaining life of the
building
Damp, stained, blistered
wall surfaces are a common problem and may have a number of causes
-
A damp internal surface
can occur from moisture rising from below ground level through old porous
brickwork. This may be due to the original old damp course being damaged,
breaking down through age, or displacement due to slight movement of the
property over years. Also in many older buildings, the external ground
level has over the years risen to above the original slate or felt damp
course
-
External walls exposed to
driving rain may
also allow a slow ingress of moisture to the internal surface. This will
cause the decorative finish to become stained and discoloured as the damp
will carry salts to the surface of the wall. Bubbling and blistering would
often occur, together with extensive discolouration
-
Walls of
old buildings converted to domestic or office use
may have been contaminated by salts, petroleum products, acids or lime,
which does not show itself until the converted property is heated. This
action may draw out the contamination which again will result in staining
and discolouration
There are
many solutions on the market that may be of assistance in overcoming the
above problems. We at John Newton & Company, however, have been involved in
remedial damp proofing products since 1937, and we are of the firm opinion
that only a waterproof membrane placed between the new surface and the old
contaminated surface will result in a permanent solution.
About Newtonite
Newtonite is one of the many products marketed by John Newton &
Company, a renowned damp proofing specialist who have been serving the building industry from their
location in South London for over 160 years. They were the first to
introduce damp proof membranes into the United
Kingdom as long ago as 1937. Their products include a full range of
waterproofing and tanking materials and drainage products, which can be
found on the main website
www.newton-membranes.co.uk.
Newtonite damp proofing membrane is made from inherently stable, high density polyethylene,
0.3mm thick, formed into a pattern of raised studs. A polythene mesh is
thermic welded to the surface on one side. The studs, 3mm high, face the
wall and create channels which allow air to circulate freely behind the
Newtonite. On the face, the mesh provides a rot proof key for the
application of plasterboard or other materials by ‘dot and dab’ with bonding
plaster. Alternatively, plasters or renders can be applied. Newtonite
is inert, with high pressure stability. It has a resistance compression of
80KN/m² and a breaking strength of over 600N/60mm. It is highly resistant to
water, alkalies, saline solution, anorganic acids and is not affected by
minerals. It is also resistant to bacteria, fungi and other small organisms.
The material is clean and easy to handle. It can be cut with scissors or a
sharp knife and working with Newtonite and its ancillary products
present no health hazard.
Although there are undoubtedly many solutions on the market that may help to
overcome these problems, we at John Newton & Company are of the firm opinion
that only a waterproof membrane placed between the new surface and the old
contaminated surface will result in a permanent solution for damp problems.
